Adolescents in Therapy
The teen years are a time of tremendous physical, mental, emotional, social, and spriritual growth. Because so much is going on this can also be a time of great challenges for any young person as well as their family. Sometimes having someone who is not part of the family to hear and really listen to what is going on can help tremendously. Sometimes parents of teens also need some guidance through this challenging time as well. And, often teens and parents need someone who is not part of the family to help sort things out.
Children in Therapy
Linda Rio is a member of The Association for Play Therapy (APT) www.a4pt.org. The APT is an organization whose mission statement is: "...to advance the psychosocial development and mental health of all people through play and play therapy, by promoting 1) the understanding and the valuing of play and play therapy, 2) the effective practice of play therapy through training, research, and support, 3) the recognition, incorporation, and preservation of diversity in play and play therapy, and 4) the development and maintenance of a strong professional organization to acomplish these objectives."

Pictured above is the New Beginnings Counseling Center play therapy room. She has worked for over twenty years designing this special room for children and their families. The play therapy room (shown above) at New Beginnings Counseling Center in Camarillo, CA, strives to provide a safe space for children, adolescents, and their families to honor the very special way children deal and process their world. The New Beginnings Counseling Center playroom is specially designed with children of all ages in mind. Toys and activities are specially designed to allow for the expression of thoughts and emotions. See also Play Therapy below.
Collaborative Family Health
I see the mind and body as one, therefore mental health as intimately related to physical/medical health. Especially when there are significant physical diagnoses and symptoms I believe it is important, whenever possible, to work with medical and other practitioners. More and more medical schools and graduate psychology and Marriage and Family Therapy training programs are offering collaborative family health as specialty options. More information about this can be obtained throught the Collaborative Family Health Association. Families are also deeply affected when a significant and/or chronic medical/mental illness sets in. All members of a family need help ansd support to deal with changes and challenges life brings.http://www.cfha.net/default.asp
Couples Therapy
Relationships are amazingly as rewarding as they are challenging and it is a myth that a happy or healthy relationship has no problems. Being in an intimate relationship takes work, lots of work. And, like everything in life there are special tools that can help make a good relationship better or help get a troubled one back on track. Sometimes having a specially trained person who is not part of the couple or family can see and hear in a different way that can help. I try to provide a perspective that is caring, honest, and balanced.
Eating Disorders Treatment
Treatment of any eating disorder requires specialized training as well as a team of professionals. New Beginnings Counseling Center has a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist, Susan Richter. I work with her and other specialists as part of a treatment team that may include a family physician, psychiatrist, nutritionist, individial/couple and or family theapist, and more. An initial assessment by a specialist is recommended.

EMDR (Eye Movement Reprocessing and Desentization)
EMDR is a specific technique requiring specialized training and certification. Research has shown this to be an effective technique for a variety of problem areas as well as to enhance coping skills and performance. For further information go to: EMDRIA, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing International Association
Family Therapy
Family therapy is a specific model of mental health practice that is recognized as one of the five core mental health disciplines by the Federal Government. MFT's are licensed in forty-eight states and recognized by most major insurance companies. For more information about Family Therapy go to The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy
Pituitary Tumors and other Neuroendcrine Disorders
Linda is on the Board of Directors for the Pituitary Network Association www.pituitary.org. She has authored several medical and mental health journal articles about the relationship between pituitary (brain tumors, not usually cancerous) and neuroendocrine (hormones) disorders and mental health symptoms. Symptoms can include: depression, anxiety, sexual disorders (low or high sex drive, infertility etc.), suicidality, anger/rage, mental confusion, and more. Physical symptoms can include weight gain/loss, skin tags, striation (marks on skin), lactation (not breast feeding related), large physical size, loss of vision and more. Proper medical assessment is, of course, necessary. Linda works with physicians and others to support patients and their family through the assessment, diagnostic, and treatment phases.
Play Therapy
Play therapy with children is done in a state-of-the-art therapeutic playroom, which employs the use of art, sandtray, puppets, therapeutic games, and other play materials. Parents and caretakers are seen as key components to their children's healing.
Adults, teens, as well as children can benefit from EMDR for certain areas of difficulty and skill enhancement.
Supervision of MFT
I am certified as an Approved Supervisor through the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). I provide supervision to those training to become supervisors (Supervision of Supervision) through this national organization, The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). www.aamft.org
Trauma
Trauma involves any physical, sexual, or emotional experience that is outside the normal range of human experiences and causes significant harm. This may result in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or other diagnoses commonly related to trauma. Stress of any kind, if it is significant, can contribute to physical and emotional damage. Since it is impossible to avoid stress there must be ways to better deal with life's circumstances.
Philosophy of Therapy: Marriage and Family Therapy
"It is important to see each person as unique and tailor their treatment to their own special needs. Developing a special, safe and caring environment is especially important. I try to act more as a coach rather than an expert; helping to guide each person, each family down whatever path they are on. Helping people have more rewarding relationships is an important goal of therapy."
I am in private practice in Ventura County, California. New Beginnings Counseling Center is centrally located in Camarllo, CA. New Beginnings Counseling Center is a group of independent psychotherapists who believe in providing the best professional services to their clients.
Marriage and Family Therapy, MFT, is a professional license issued by the state of California. The basic philosophy of MFT originated out of seeing the family as the basic unit of all relationships. I use an integrated systemic approach to therapy. This makes use of a variety of therapeutic modalities including cognitive, behavioral, psychodynamic, brief, and other methods depending upon the needs of the individual client, but within the perspective of the family system. In this role I work with family physicians, nurses, teachers and others who may be necessary as part of a good treatment team. Of course, I always discuss with clients any recommendations I may have for consultations with other professionals and obtain written permission prior to discussing any case. I believe it is important to see the mind and the body as very much connected so it is important to assess the whole person/family's needs in order to provide the most up-to-date and very best care.
I feel it is important for any professional to belong to significant organizations specific to their profession so I am a member of several organizations I feel are important to my professional skill development as well as the profession as a whole. These include: The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, AAMFT; The California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, CAMFT; National Eating Disorders Association, NEDA; The International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals, iaedp.
I received my master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Alliant University (formerly United States International University) in San Diego, California.
In addition to being in private practice for over 20 years, I have taught in the graduate school of Psychology at California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, California. I hold leadership positions within the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT), currently as president (2008-2010) of the California Divison of AAMFT. I served on the Board of Directors of The California Association for Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT), as well as President of the Ventura Chapter of CAMFT (1989-1991).
I was honored by the Ventura Chapter of CAMFT in 1995 to receive their "Outstanding Chapter Leader of the Year" award. In 2004 I was again honored, this time by the state CAMFT association, with the prestigious Clark Vincent Award, for Outstanding Literary Contribution for co-authorship of, The Anorexia Diaries.
New Beginnings Counseling Center is located right off the 101 Freeway in Camarllo, CA. We are just up the street from the In 'N Out and we are very close to the Camarillo Outlet Mall.
